South Asian Bridal Fashion on a Budget
Think you need to spend $$$$ to get a fabulous wedding dress? Check out how you can do bridal fashion on a budget!
Reuse it – Look through your mother’s and grandmother’s jewellery for those timeless heirloom pieces. Paired correctly with your dress and mixed with some modern pieces, the result is a stylish contemporary look.
Surf it – Be a globe-trotting shopper without the exorbitant plane ticket costs. Although the pickings for online South Asian fashions are slim, more and more retailers are taking their selections online, creating a more competitive price range for budget-savvy brides.
Rent it – This is not for everyone, but many South Asian boutiques do keep a selection of bridal gowns exclusively for rental. Read the contract and be sure to thoroughly examine your rental at the showroom before agreeing to anything. Traditional South Asian jewellery can also be rented, or you can get other styles online.
Downgrade it – Often times the word bridal is an automatic mark-up on the cost of any garment or service. Try shopping the formal and party wear section. This may mean you don’t get the traditional bridal attire, but if you are not the traditional type, it might not matter.
Sell it – If you sell your (gently used) lengha , you could get back at least a portion of what you spent. As a courtesy, dry-clean the dress, and use pictures of you wearing it (head cropped out) to sell it. This is better than those grainy shots of the lengha lying flat on your bed. Kijiji and Craigslist are an obvious place to start advertising.
