How to Reinvent Your Old Sarees
Sarees are impeccably chic but can get incredibly expensive. It’s totally possible to repurpose your old sarees, and with a little creative styling, be able to wear them over and over again.
Reinvent your old sarees by changing up the blouse or choli.
You can also do the same with any lengha.
When a blouse or choli fits well, your whole outfit flows. You will need a good tailor to make this work. Most tailors in India will work with you and there are some great ones in the US, too. Ask the tailor to show you their design booklet — it will have different patterns that you can browse through.
STYLE TIP: Always give the tailor or store one blouse as a sample for stitching before giving the rest.
For my sister’s recent wedding we stitched four blouses for each saree for her trousseau. She had four completely outfits for every saree she wore.
Ideas for designing your cholis:
1. The gold or silver blouse with sequins and crystals: a pricey investment, but worth the splurge. Actress Deepika Padukone sports one elegantly. The crystal blouse is versatile and you can mix and match with other sarees in your wardrobe.
2. The crepe sleeveless/halter blouse: the addition of this simple blouse to your saree trousseau will transform a traditional saree into a more modern one.
3. The contrast blouse: a blouse that always contrasts the color of the saree. Mixing and match orange with green or purple with yellow.
4. The traditional blouse: A must-have for every closet. The design of the blouse should be simple. The sleeve length should come right above your elbows. The neckline should be a simple square or a U-shaped neck.
The back of the blouse can be customized with patterns and embroidery.
Most designers also sell individual blouses that range anywhere from $50 – $150.
